Knowing where to start when putting an event together can be very confusing and intimidating. We can help secure the proper permits needed to stage the event along with working closely with city officials on the event logistics. Obtaining a permit is not a significant risk, and we have never had an event stopped when a permit application has been made. The larger risk is in not securing a permit, and having fire officials shut down your event for the lack of one.

Temporary Use Permits
Events in public space require temporary use permits (TUP). Individual city civil codes establish the regulations and permit requirements for temporary commercial uses. The purpose of these regulations and permit requirements is to ensure that only suitable temporary uses are allowed and to ensure that basic health, safety, and community welfare standards are met. The Temporary Use Permit regulates land use only and does not exempt the business operator from any other required Town, County, State or Federal permit or license.

Temporary uses include such activities as a seasonal Christmas tree lot in a shopping center, a business having an outdoor parking lot sales event, and an artist selling wood sculptures next to a retail business.

Tent Permits
Each locality has different tent permit procedures. Most localities require a permit for all events, while a few waive the requirement for private events on private property. The main requirement is driven by the State of California Fire Code, which requires that tents over 200 square feet have a fire permit. To secure a fire permit, we must measure and diagram the event site, furnish the tent with proper exiting and safety equipment and submit the plan for approval at least seven days before delivery. The primary purposes of the permit is to let fire authorities know where large concentrations of people are in the event of an emergency, and also to ensure that proper safety equipment and egress are provided if the tent needs to be evacuated.

Fire departments can issue a desk permit, or require an inspection depending on their concerns. So, it is best to set-up a tent the day before an event to allow for Fire Marshall inspection if it is required.

Other Permits
Although rare in our service area, some cities also require building permits or zoning permits before tents can be erected. Building departments are often interested in the staking method. If you are working on a large event, it may require an architect’s or civil engineer’s approval to get a permit. In these cases, 4-6 weeks are necessary to get the necessary permits.
